Pastor Mark

Adult Education

This year for my morning devotions, I've been reading a little book titled, Seize the Day with Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer, as you may know, was a Lutheran pastor who stood against the Nazis during World War II, and was martyred at the end of the war, just a few days before the Allies liberated Berlin. This devotional book contains snippets of his many writings. The passage on June 2, quoted from his book The Cost of Discipleship struck me: "When it is all said and done, the life of faith is nothing if not an unending struggle of the spirit with every available weapon against the flesh." The editor of this devotional book then comments: "We would like our faith in Christ to put an end to our struggles...and to problems with our sin and wrongdoing. But faith does no such thing. Faith ends nothing except our alienation from God. These struggles continue and often intensify. Sin and wrongdoing become much more sensitive and complex issues." This is a reminder to us that believing in Jesus, trusting in Jesus, doesn't solve our problems as much as it gives us the capacity and wearwithal to face them and do battle with them.

MEMORY GARDEN

MEMORY BRICK ORDERS

Memory Brick orders for the first phase must be received at the Church by Tuesday June 8th. We will submit the order and the first shipment should arrive approximately mid to late July, about the same time as the Columbarium is expected to arrive. We will send a second order into Polar Engraving after the Columbarium arrives if we receive orders for five or more bricks.

We now have 35 Interment agreements completed. The 72 niche Columbarium has been ordered and should arrive in late July. Construction of the Memory Garden is scheduled to start sometime in June.

Memory Bricks will be available with free freight for the next week. The “memory bricks" are a wonderful way to honor your loved ones OR commemorate a special occasion in the life of your family - baptism, confirmation, wedding/anniversary, Eagle Scout, Charter member of SOTP, military service. Please consider a memorial for your parents or grandparents as another option. Bricks are available to purchase in two sizes - 8" x 8" - $150.00 or 4" x 8" - $80.00. Order forms available on-line here or at the display in the gathering area. The forms can be mailed in or put in collection box at church.

Brass Band

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

Come join the SOTP Artist Series on July 3, at 7 PM. The Brass Band from Brassworks will lead us in a wonderful tribute to our country. Watch for more details.

Happy birthday, America! Celebrate the occasion with music at SOTP. Enjoy the nationally recognized Brass Band from Brass Works during a special live, free concert in the church Sanctuary, sponsored by the SOTP Artist Series on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at 7:00 pm.

This special event showcases the extraordinary instrumental musical entertainment of Brass Works, which will perform popular patriotic music with a bit of Dixieland and Jazz, the root of American music. The lead trumpet of the group, Mark Olen, performed during this year’s Easter services in our Sanctuary. The group's instrumentation is comprised of the trumpet, trombone, french horn and tuba and continues to provide outstanding musical, as well as, educational performances.

Brass Works ensemble musicians are widely recognized and have performed with world-class entertainers like Tony Bennett and David Foster; and the Chicago, Elgin, and Rockford Symphony Orchestras; Grant Park and Ravinia Festival Orchestras; and the Lyric Opera, Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and Chicago Jazz Orchestras, among others.

They have contributed to hundreds of artist recording projects, and television and radio commercials. The Brass Works ensemble musicians are also faculty members at the University of Illinois Chicago, North Park University, Columbia College, the Music Institute, and Oakton Community College.

Admission to the live concert is free and donations are gratefully accepted. Bring the family to experience this entertaining tribute to our country.

Flower Note

Let There Be Flowers

Joyfully, we will begin to meet in person for our worship services as well as doing our online services. We continue to ask you to please consider signing up to donate flowers to brighten up the sanctuary. As normal, each arrangement is $50.

The bouquets are delivered from the florist for the weekend worship services. You can pick up your flowers after the Sunday services or on the Monday following. The church is open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

If you are interested in donating flowers, please contact Diane Mollis at dem910@outlook.com. Provide your name, address, phone number, for whom the flowers are dedicated to or in memory of, and which Sunday you are interested in displaying the bouquet. If you have any questions, you may call Diane at 224-654-6677.

Thank you for saying yes to flowers for the sanctuary!

Prayer Chain

Any member can submit a prayer request to our prayer chain group. There are two methods to do this:

  • Send an email directly to sotp-prayer-chain@gaggle.email as shown above
  • Use our Prayer Request Form link available on our website under"New Content"

With the intent to provide our church members with additional information and encourage open dialog, our monthly council report will be posted on our website each month. This document will show minutes of the past council meeting, full financials, attendance charts and various ministry meeting minutes. Check out the May, 2021 Council Report. We've also designed a simple feedback form to share your questions, concerns or comments. Let us know what you’re thinking.
